Self-Defense
At El Halev, we are committed to offering effective, empowering, and women-centered self-defense instruction. All of our courses focus on the special needs, questions, capabilities and strengths of women. We see women's self-defense as much more than a set of skills for stopping a would-be attacker; we see them as tools that women can employ to broaden their choices and fearlessly confront life's challenges.
Basic Self-Defense
Our basic self-defense course consists of five 2-hour meetings in which students are taught how to physically & mentally cope with potentially traumatic events. During the course, participants increase their levels of awareness, acquire verbal and physical skills and build self confidence and inner strength.

IMPACT Full-Force Self-Defense
This intensive twenty-four hour course teaches participants how to use their voices, physical skills, judgment, and emotions to prevent and/or survive assault. Each woman has the opportunity to test her skills in simulated attack scenarios. Fully-armored and specially-trained attacker/instructors allow her to deliver full force strikes and kicks.
Women from ages 14 to 70 have completed the 24-hour program. Graduates report successfully stopping attacks up to eight years after completing training.
Researchers report that women who have completed the course report increased self-confidence, increased ability to set boundaries, higher self-esteem, and greater freedom in their everyday. Other research has shown that women who have been previously assaulted report that this form of self-defense training facilitates their healing and increases their self-confidence.
Physical requirements: Any woman who can walk briskly across the room to answer the phone, walk up a flight of stairs carrying a bag of groceries, and sit down on the ground and get up again, has the physical fitness she needs to succeed in this course.

Self Defense Instructor Training Program
Our self-defense instructor training program is open to any woman practicing martial arts who is at least at a brown belt (or the equivalent of a brown belt) level. The program consists of two different types of courses: One designed for experienced self-defense instructors and the other for female martial artists who are new to the self-defense instruction field. Our goal is to train a cadre of female self-defense instructors with martial arts backgrounds who will teach nationwide under the supervision of El Halev. Through training our own instructors we ensure that the high standards El Halev maintains in all its branches is upheld wherever classes are taught.
The training program includes five three-hour sessions taught by El Halev senior trainers, an internship with one of our senior teachers and a written or oral exam administered by the self-defense course committee.
